ARTIST BIO

Rod Dales was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1955. His family moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 1970 and later settled in Surrey, British Columbia. After graduating from U.B.C. Commerce in 1978 with a degree in Urban Land Economics and Finance, he eventually became an active partner in various companies in B.C., Alberta, and Texas. With the encouragement of his father, Rod completed the purchase of his company - Dales Properties Ltd. in 1995.

From an early age Rod was taking photographs. This was initially inspired by his mother who gave him his first camera as a young boy. Throughout his life, Rod has been drawn to spending time in the solitude of the outdoors. He found that the inner peace he experienced would effect every aspect of his life. Of course taking photographs was part of this private time for him. Capturing these experiences in pictures would offer him beautiful reminders of that inner peace as well as that quiet part of himself that was easily forgotten. In 1997 after much encouragement from friends and family, he realized that his passion for photography had a voice of it's own, and that it was time to share this voice. Along with his wife, Kira, Rod created another business - Dales Fine Art Photography.

Creating a balance between his outward life of business and his inner life of photography and nature, Rod has allowed himself to discover many facets of who he is and what his values are in life. He has been able to achieve an enviable position of nurturing these two aspects of himself equally, resulting in a harmonious and balanced outlook in life. This harmony is evident in the pictures he captures. His gift is sharing this harmony with the world, and in so doing sharing himself and his love of life.

Rod currently lives in Crescent Beach, British Columbia with his wife, Kira; their three children, Sean, Cullen, and Natasha; and their two dogs.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I love the beauty that exists all around us, be it a reflection in a lake, or moving water through rocks - nature's exquisite form never ceases to amaze me. When I am moved to capture this beauty in a photograph, I tend towards looking for the unusual, the sublime, what I like to think of as being it's essence. Some of the photographs have more recognizable scenes, while others leave room for the viewer's interpretations. Whatever the piece conveys, it comes from a true love of nature in all it's complexities.
